Review: Filipino Heroes League
While waiting for the screening of a movie, I grabbed a copy of the Filipino Heroes League (FHL) today and read in one sitting the whole first volume of the Paolo Fabregas opus.
For someone who also aims to create comics relevant to Filipinos, I really enjoyed how Fabregas combined the fantastic and the mundane. FHL also serves as a critique of the Philippine society, including how news organizations cover events.
But there are just a couple of misses, one may offend sensibilities and the other, possibly a minor factual mistake.
GMA News features Segovia Solutions
GMA 7's Saksi , GMA News TV's News to Go, and Balitanghali Weekend aired reports about our comics, Segovia Solutions. Their news website GMA News Online wrote an article about it. This may not be the best comic in Komikon, but we hope to prove to the viewers that comics can be used as a medium for social commentary.

Here's another feature in DownwithManila by indie comics creator Amado Aparentado.
Writing comics for something you really are passionate about is really fulfilling.
Today marks the second anniversary of the Maguindanao Massacre. Join the country as it calls for an end to impunity.

Back to the ill-fated ship
Our comic series Segovia Solutions is mainly about fantastic characters in contemporary social problems in the Philippines. First issue tackles killings of journalists, the second one will revolve around cyclone preparedness and sea tragedies.
Segovia Solutions # 2. As a rescue diver searches for her missing sister in the ill-fated Endosulfan-carrying M/V Princess of the Stars, she encounters a horde of restless souls (art by Tin Manasan ) |

More Segovia Solutions teasers
Our collaborator Tin Manasan made these stylish teasers for our upcoming comics Segovia Solutions. Yup, the name on the calling card is Julius Segovia, my best bud GMA News reporter who allowed me to create a character named after him.

Two years ago, I took this shot from my cellphone camera, on a makeshift graveyard for journalists down south. Yes, that is a real news vehicle, crushed and buried deep in the ground.
Being among the few Manila-based reporters who witnessed the bodies of 57 (another one is still missing) people being dug out. Everyone who saw the crime scene itself has the responsibility to let the people know of the problem of impunity in the country. No one is above the law, they say, but until now, more than a hundred suspects roam free after the massacre. The list of journalists being assassinated has not stopped even after Nov. 23, 2009.
Journalists being killed on a regular basis, for most people I'm afraid, have become a recurring plot that they set aside.
On my part, I aimto reach a different group of people, mostly teenagers and twentysomethings who may have been stereotyped for their fond of big-eyed characters and hyper-muscled heroes. With the help of Singapore-based artist Tin Manasan and former Philippine Collegian artist Jether Amar, we created the comic series, "Segovia Solutions. "

The Maguindanao Massacre. The M/V Princess of the Stars Tragedy. The havoc of the Tropical Storm Ondoy. If super heroes walked the earth, would the Philippines have a different history?
TV Interview with J. Torres and Elbert Or
DC comics writer J. Torres |
Lola artist Elbert Or |
Another blast from my past to convince myself to write a comic now.
Here is one of my poorly-voiced early television reports for News on Q featuring Wonder Girl Filipino-Canadian writer J. Torres and Lola artist Elbert Or. My voiceover sucked in comparison to the Canadian accent of Torres and the Atenean alum Or. Hehe. Anyway, Torres told me that an aspiring writer should stop aspiring and start writing, while Or told me off-cam that artists like him should have a thick skin to do some cold calls to publishers and potential collaborators.
Komikon 2008 Coverage
Blast from the past!
Here is a television feature on Komikon 2008 that I produced for News on Q. This is the first time that I met Trese creator Budjette Tan, Callwork's Hazel Manzano and Beerkada and convention organizer Lyndon Gregorio. The main point of the report was to show that Trese and Callwork comics were published on blogs before getting a mainstream publisher. I remember that I left the venue, the UP Bahay ng Alumni, soaking with sweat because of droves of fans that flooded the building.
Hmm. Should I create my own comic now?
